Private William Laidler

Private William Laidler, 9th ( Service ) Battalion, Seaforth Highlanders. He was killed in action in France on 14th July 1916 during the Battle of the Somme and is buried in Dantzig Alley British Cemetery, Mametz, Somme, France. He fell in the successful assault on the Bazentin Ridge although opportunities were missed to capture the infamous High Wood which was not completely captured for another two months and cost many casualties. He had been born in Tweedmouth and had enlisted at Fort George, Inverness. The first photograph shows a group of Seaforths checking a captured dugout and the second shows the Battalion roll call after the fighting.
