Private William Lindsay Croll, 4th/5th ( Territorial ) Battalion, Black Watch. He was killed in action in France on 13th November 1916 during the Battle of the Somme and is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France. He fell in the assault on the village of St. Pierre Divion which was carried out successfully in a thick mist and resulted in the capture of many prisoners. Total casualties were 4 Officers and 148 Other Ranks with 1 Officer and 11 Other Ranks killed. By November the autumn rains had turned the ground into a glutinous quagmire making all movement very difficult as can be seen from the photographs.
