Private Robert Mitchell

Private Robert Mitchell ( possibly ) 1st/4th ( Territorial ) Battalion, Duke of Wellington’s ( West Riding Regiment ). He was killed in action in France on 17th September 1916 during the Battle of the Somme and is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France. The photos show the glutinous nature of the ground after the autumn rains had turned the chalky and shell blasted ground into a glutinous quagmire made movement of men and guns very difficult. The colour image shows a peaceful Somme landscape today.
