Corporal Peter Paxton

Corporal Peter Paxton, 22nd Battalion ( 3rd Tyneside Scottish ), Northumberland Fusiliers. He was killed in action in Belgium on 17th October 1917, aged 24, during the Battle of Third Ypres and is buried in La Brique Military Cemetery, No. 2, Ypres, Flanders, Belgium.  He had been born in Tweedmouth and had enlisted in Alnwick. His Headstone is inscribed ” Ever Remembered By His Loving Father Mother & Family, Berwick”.  At that time the Battalion were in front line trenches in the Langemarck sector and suffered casualties from enemy shelling. The photographs give an idea of the atrocious conditions during the later part of the Battle where the fragile Flanders drainage systems had been smashed by the incessant shelling.
