Private John Younger

Private John Younger, 1st Battalion, Kings Own Scottish Borderers. He was killed by shellfire in France on 14th April 1917 during the Battle of Arras and is commemorated on the Arras Memorial, Arras, France. He was a native of Tweedmouth and had enlisted at the Depot in Berwick. On that date the Battalion took over frontline trenches between La Bergere and Marliere in the Guemappe sector. Enemy shelling was continuous with resultant casualties including three second lieutenants killed. The first photograph shows troops and a tank in a captured village near Arras and the others were taken during the Battle.
