Lance Corporal John Kirkhope, 1st Battalion, Kings Own Scottish Borderers. He was killed in France on the beaches at Dunkirk on 2nd June 1940, aged 37 and is commemorated on the Dunkirk Memorial. He was the son of William and Helen Kirkhope and the husband of Mary Kirkhope of Berwick. The Battalion was part of the rearguard for the British Expeditionary Force and finally was withdrawn to the beaches on 31st May. Casualties were suffered on the beaches from enemy bombing until the last Borderers were evacuated on 3rd June.
