Sergeant John Johnson, 52nd ( New Ontario ) Battalion, Canadian Infantry. He was killed in action in Belgium on 3rd June 1916, aged 39 and is buried in Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery. He had been born in Berwick and was the son of the late Henry and Elizabeth Johnson and the husband of Catherine Wonnacott ( formerly Johnson ) of Van Home Street, Dryden, Ontario. He fell during the Battle of Mount Sorrel which consisted of a surprise German attack on the Canadian Corps positions which captured some ground followed by Canadian counter attacks which restored the lines to their original positions. This Battle, designed to disrupt preparations for the coming Somme Offensive, was fought between 2nd and 14th June and cost the Canadians some 8,000 casualties. The image was taken after the battle.
