Driver James Younger

Driver James Younger, 23rd Battery, 40th Brigade, Royal Field Artillery. He was killed in France on 6th May 1917, aged 29, during the Battle of Arras. He was the son of John and Margaret Younger of Kiln Hill, Tweedmouth and is buried in Fauberg D’Amiens Cemetery, Arras, France. His Headstone is inscribed ” Also In Memory Of 7033 Pte. John Younger K.O.S.B Killed 21.4.17 Age 31 Brother “. His brother John had been killed less than a month previously ( see above ). Before enlisting he had worked for the North East Railway in the goods warehouse at Tweedmouth before becoming a shunter at Gateshead. The Field Artillery used the 18 pounder field gun in an anti infantry using high explosive and shrapnel shells one of which is shown here.
