Private Henry Laidler

Private Henry Laidler, 1st Battalion, Seaforth Highlanders. He was killed in action in France on 9th May 1915, aged 25, during the Battle of Aubers Ridge. He was a Regular soldier and the son of John and Elizabeth Laidler of 16 Station Cottages, Tweedmouth and is commemorated on the Le Touret Memorial, Nord, France. The Battalion was part of the Dehra Dun Brigade and the attack on the Ridge was a complete failure in the face of intense machine gun and artillery fire. No ground was gained despite great heroism and casualties were severe and the Brigade suffered nearly 900 casualties. The photographs show Seaforths in a trench with a pet dog in one and a trench periscope in another.
