Private George Wilson

Private George S. Wilson, 9th ( Highland ) Battalion, Royal Scots ( The Dandy Ninth ). He was killed in action in France on 23rd July 1916 during the Battle of the Somme and is buried in Delville Wood Cemetery, Longueval, Somme, France. He fell in the attack by ” B ” and ” C ” Coys. on the strong German positions near High Wood. Artillery preparation was poor and machine gun fire was heavy. No gains were made and 162 casualties were suffered. All the Officers were either killed or wounded. He had been born in Berwick and resided in the Town but had enlisted in London. The photos show Scots troops on the Somme and the colour image shows a peaceful Somme landscape today with” no gas, no barbed wire, no guns firing now”.
