Private George Fortune Dunn, 1st/5th ( Dumfries and Galloway ) Battalion, Kings Own Scottish Borderers. He was killed in action against the Turks in Palestine on 1st November 1917 and is buried in Gaza War Cemetery, Gaza, Israel. He had been born in Foulden Berwickshire and had enlisted in Berwick. He fell during the Third Battle of Gaza which forced the Turks into a headlong retreat and opened the door to the advance on Jerusalem. The Battalion, which was part of the 52nd ( Lowland ) Division, sustained 100 casualties during this time. The photograph shows Borderers on the march in Palestine.
