Private Robert Donaldson

Private Robert George Donaldson, 28th ( Northwest ) Battalion, Canadian Infantry. He was killed in action in Flanders on 6th June 1916, aged 33, during the Battle of Mount Sorrell. He was the son of Robert and Isabella Donaldson of 25 East Street, Berwick and is commemorated on the Menin Gate, Ypres, Flanders, Belgium. The Battle was fought between 2nd and 13th June. German forces captured the high ground of Mount Sorrell and  Tor Top. After a number of attacks and counter attacks most of the lost ground was recaptured at a cost to the two Canadian Divisions and the British 20th ( Light ) Division of around 8,000 casualties.
