Private Charles Erswell

Private Charles Godfrey Erswell, 24th( 1st Tyneside Irish) Battalion, Northumberland Fusiliers. He died of wounds in France on 9th April, 1917 which was the first day of the Battle of Arras and is buried in Bailleul Road East Cemetery, St. Laurent Blangy, Nord, France. He had been born in Berwick and was the second son of Mrs Judge and the late Sergeant-Major Instructor Erswell of the George Inn, Church Street, Berwick. He was a keen sportsman and especially excelled at football. The photographs show troops during the Battle.
