Private Arthur Wakenshaw

Private Arthur Wakenshaw, 8th ( Service ) Battalion, Northumberland Fusiliers. He was killed in action at Suvla, Gallipoli on 19th August 1915 and is commemorated on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey. He had been born in Tweedmouth and had enlisted in Newcastle. The Battalion was part of the 34th Brigade in the 11th ( Northern ) Division and had taken part in the landings at Suvla Bay in an attempt to break the deadlock in the Gallipoli campaign. On 19th August an attempt was made to capture Turkish positions at ” Hetman Chair “. The Battalion met very strong resistance and lost nearly all its Officers and 400 Other Ranks in killed, wounded and missing.  The photos show Troops at Suvla.
