Private John Hynes, 2nd Battalion, Northumberland Fusiliers. He was killed in action on 24th May 1915 on the last day of the Battle of Second Ypres and is commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial, Ypres, Belgium. He was born in Tweedmouth and enlisted at Berwick-on-Tweed, Northumberland. He fell in the fighting near Bellaawarde and the ill conceived counter attack on Wittepoort Farm which stood little chance of success and which practically annihilated the Battalion. 5 Officers and 29 Other Ranks were killed and 8 Officers and 133 Other Ranks were wounded. A further 188 Other Ranks were posted missing. which usually meant killed.
