Private Hugh Ross

Private Hugh Ross, 8th ( Service )Battalion, East Yorkshire Regiment. He was killed in action in France on 15th September 1916, aged 21, during the Battle of the Somme. He was the son of William and Isabella Ross of 3 Church Row, Bamburgh and is commemorated on the Loos Memorial, Dud Corner, Loos, France. The autumnal rains turned the chalky soil of the Region into a glutinous quagmire making all movement difficult as can be seen from the photographs.
