Private Robert Hume, 1st/4th ( Border) Battalion Kings Own Scottish Borderers. He died of wounds on 27th July 1915 aboard a Hospital Ship, aged 21 and was buried at sea. He had been wounded on 12th July 1915 during the ” Charge ” on the Turkish trenches at Achi Baba Nullah. He was the son of Mr and Mrs Hume of Ayton and was a Painter to trade. He is commemorated on the Helles Memorial, Helles, Gallipoli, Turkey. His Uncle and Grandfather had both received Long Service Medals for service with the K.O.S.B. Volunteers. In local circles he was a noted sprinter. The first photograph shows Achi Baba marked with a cross. This “hill” dominated the battlefield and was never captured. The second shows the Borderers attacking at Gallipoli.
