Private George Allan

Private George Allan, 2nd Battalion, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders. He was killed in action on 23rd October 1918 in France, aged 32 during the ” Advance to Victory”. He was a native of Ayton and the nephew of W. & M. Allan of High Street, Ayton and is buried in Montay British Cemetery, Montay, France. 2nd Argylls were in the 98th Brigade part of the 33rd Division. He was a very talented musician especially on the piano and organ. He played the organ in Ayton Parish Kirk and it is said that there were few musical events in the district where he was not playing or conducting. The photos show Allied troops advancing during the final 100 days of the War. His Headstone is inscribed ” L. R. A. M., A. R. C. O., Sub Graduate Durham, Ayton, Berwickshire. Ever Dear “.
