Surgeon Major David Taylor

Surgeon Major David Robert Taylor, Royal Army Medical Corps, att. 1st/4th ( Border ) Battalion, Kings Own Scottish Borderers. He was killed on Gallipoli on 12th July 1915 during the “Charge”  on the Turkish trenches at Achi Baba Nullah and is commemorated on the Helles Memorial, Helles, Gallipoli, Turkey. He had been treating the wounded at a Dressing Station near the front line when a shell burst close to him and he collapsed, hit in the head by a piece of shrapnel.  He was a native of Eskbank, Dalkeith and came to Ayton in 1895 to carry on his medical practice. Previously he had been on an Arctic expedition where his medical knowledge was put to good use. In Ayton he was chairman of the Ayton School Board and on his death he left a widow and five children.
