Private Charles Dunn

Private Charles Nelson Dunn, 1st/4th ( Border ) Battalion Kings Own Scottish Borderers. He was killed in action during the Second Battle of Gaza on 19th April 1917, aged 29. He was the son of John and Elizabeth Nelson Dunn of Northfield, Ayton and is buried in Gaza Cemetery, Palestine. Private Dunn had been born in Coldingham and had lived and enlisted in Ayton. He fell in the attack on “Outpost Hill” where the Battalion suffered heavy casualties with 15 Officers and 340 Other Ranks being killed or wounded. The Turkish redoubt on the hill top was captured with great bravery but the heavy casualties and a shortage of ammunition in the face of fierce counter attacks forced a retirement. It was here that the gallant Major Wattie Forrest M.C. from Kelso fell whilst leading the attack and Lieutenant Elder from Coldstream was wounded for the second time. The photos show the Borderers in Palestine in 1917.
