Private Peter Barnes, 12th Battalion, Royal Scots. He died in France on 30th September 1916, aged 28, of wounds received in action during the Battle of the Somme. He was the son of John and Mary Barnes of Causewayend, Ancrum and is buried in Barlin Communal Cemetery Extension, Pas de Calais, France. It is interesting to note that he served as Private William Scott. The photograph shows a recently captured trench on the Somme with the very evident chalky soil of the Region.
