Private James Fowler, 215th Coy. Machine Gun Corps ( Infantry ). He was killed in France on 16th June 1917, aged 25, and is buried in Metz-En-Couture Communal Cemetery British Extension. Pas de Calais, France. He was the son of John and Agnes Fowler of Ancrum and had been born at Eccles, Berwickshire. Before enlisting he had been working as a shepherd at Hilton’s Hill Toll, Ancrum and he had originally he had enlisted in the Kings Own Scottish Borderers before transferring to the M.G.C. The M.G.C. used the Vickers Mk1 water cooled gun in both defensive and offensive roles. The photograph shows gunners taking a break.
