Erected to the memory of JAMES LUKE Plasterer Coldstream who died 28 December 1848 aged 42 years

Commentary

The 1841 census shows a James Luke, a Plasterer, living in Market Place, Coldstream with Mary (70), Wellm (50), Martha and Henry (both 40) and Hannah aged 25.  Census shows James’ birth year as 1811 not 1806. In 1851 Thomas (57) and Elizabeth (58) were living in East High Street.  Thomas’ occupation at that time was a Draper.  Their daughter Margaret and son William (25), also a Draper, lived with them along with Mary Sharp their 33 year old servant.  In the 1861 census Thomas, a now retired Draper, is living in 2 High Street with son William, grandson George (13) and servant Catherine Laidler (20).
