in memory of captain JOHN RALPH CARR – ELLISON, of hedgeley, dunston hill and hebburn. eldest surviving son of RALPH CARR – ELLISON born at hedgeley 7^th june 1832. gaz^td to the 33^rd (duke of wellington’s) reg^t April 1853.  served throughout the crimean campaign, including the battles of Alma (through which he carried the regimental colour), Inkerman and the siege of Sevastopol medal with 3 clasps, turkish order of medjidie & sardinian medal served for 13 years with the 4^th K.O.R.  Reg^t. retired Nov. 1870. Justice of the peace for the co^s of Northumber^d & Durham. high sheriff for the former in 1888 died at Hedgeley 6^{th F}eb. 1907.
