Commentary

FAMILY HISTORY

Jane Susannah was baptised at St Maurice, Eglingham, on 25 July 1832, the daughter of Andrew Ker Moffat and his wife Mary, nee Storey.  Jane Susannah was their 7^th child.

1841 Census: Living at Beanley, the youngest of 5 surviving siblings. Her father is a farmer.

1851 Census: Living at Beanley in the household of her brother John, a farmer. Both her parents have died. Their uncle Ralph Storey is in the adjacent household.

1861 Census: Living at Beanley with her brother Ralph, who has changed his surname to Storey.

On 24 December 1861 Jane Susannah married William Logan, at St Maurice, Eglingham. The Gateshead Observer of 4 January 1862: “At Eglingham Church on 24 December, William Logan Esq, M.D, Cupar, Fife, to Jane Susannah, daughter of the late Andrew Ker Moffat, Esq, of Beanley, Northumberland.”

1871 Census: Living at Beanley with her brother Ralph. William Logan is living with his widowed father and sister in Ayr.

William died on 6 May 1871 in Ayr. His estate, amounting to just over £330, passed to Jane Susannah.

1881 and 1891 Census: Jane Susannah continues to live with her unmarried brother, Ralph Storey Storey.

Jane Susannah died at Beanley on 27 November 1907, aged 75 years.

Jane Susannah Logan’s Will included a provision amounting to £200, to be managed by the Vicar of Eglingham, to place three stained glass windows near the communion table in the church, to the memory of her father and mother. A brass plate was to be placed underneath setting out the names of her parents, the cost, and who had paid for the windows.

Following her death, a stained-glass window, depicting the Transfiguration of Jesus, was placed above the altar at the east end of St Maurice. It was designed by Clayton and Bell of London. The dedication at the base of the window reads: “Erected by Jane Susannah Logan to the Glory of God and in memory of her parents Andrew Ker Moffat and Mary his life 1908”
