Transcription

In Affectionate Remembrance of  JOHN ROUGH who died at the Hermitage November 18^th 1878 aged 67 years. Also, ISABELLA, his wife died April 6. 1891, aged 80 years. JOHN their son died Jan. 18. 1891, aged 48 years. ROSANNAH their Granddaughter, died March 2. 1881, aged 4 years.

ALNWICK MERCURY, 23 NOVEMBER 1878

SUDDEN DEATH NEAR EGLINGHAM

On Wednesday last, an inquest was held at the Hermitage, in the parish of Eglingham, before Geo. E Watson, Esq., coroner for North Northumberland, touching the death of John Rough, an agricultural labourer, 67 years of age, living at the Hermitage. On Monday morning last, the deceased left his house at a quarter past seven to go to his work. He complained of being ill, and had a bealing [sic] at the breast, with which he had been troubled for some years, on the left side. About ten minutes to eight, Samuel Thompson of Beanley, shepherd, when looking through his stock, saw the deceased’s dog living [sic] in a pasture field near the Hermitage. He went up and found the deceased lying on his back, dead. Dr Robertson, of Glanton, after a superficial examination of the body, after hearing the evidence, and from his knowledge of the case, was of the opinion that deceased died from heart disease. – Verdict, “Natural Causes”
