To the Memory of ISABELLA, wife of NICHOLAS JEFFREY, who died at Cornhill, 18th March 1932 aged 77 years.
Also the above NICHOLAS JEFFREY, who died 8th Feb. 1935 aged 82 years.
Also JAMES, son of the above, who fell in action in France, 24th Oct. 1917 aged 29 years.
Also MARTHA JANE, daughter of the above, who died 10th Oct. 1949 aged 56 years.
Also AGNES, daughter of the above, who died 31st Aug. 1953 aged 72 years.
Military record
Private James Jeffrey, 17th ( Service ) Battalion, Royal Scots. He was killed in action in Belgium by shellfire on 24th October 1917 during the Third Battle of Ypres. He was the eldest son of Nicholas and Isabella Jeffrey who ran the village shop and Post Office in Cornhill-on-Tweed and he is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Zonnebeke, Flanders, Belgium. At the time of his death he had been on sentry duty in his section of a front line trench. He is also commemorated on the Roger Church memorial plaque now placed in Coldstream Parish Church.
Commentary
Nicholas Jeffrey was born in October 1852 in Northumberland to Rachel (m Jeffrey), age 24, and James Jeffrey, age 25. Nicholas Jeffrey married Isabella Jamieson Crammond in October 1877 when he was 25 years old.
Nicholas Jeffrey born at Twizell Mill he had the small shop in Cornhill. His wife Isabella was born at Kairton Northumberland. They had a large family Agnes, Rachel, James, Helen, Martha, Alexander and Ruby.
