Erected by JAMES GILLHSPY in memory of MARGARET SCOTT their daughter who died at Sprouston Station 19 Jan  1861 aged 9 months.

Also ELIZABETH ELLEN their daughter who died  May 10th 1870  aged 8 months

Also DOROTHY  their daughter who died 8th July 1876 aged 21 years.

JAMES GILLHSPY who died at Wooden Mill18th April 1898.

The above MARGARET GILLHSPY died at Wark 10th March 1912

 

Commentary

.

He was station master at Sprouston for a number of years.

When James Porteous Gillhespy was born in 1822 in Hexham, Northumberland, his father, James, was 29 and his mother, Ann Porteous  was 24. He married Margaret Scott on 19 September 1854 in Carham, Northumberland. They had ten children in 19 years. He died on 18 April 1898 at Wooden Mill  Kelso, Roxburghshire, having lived a long life of 76 years, and was buried in Carham, Northumberland.
