Private Thomas Gray, 31st (Alberta) Battalion, Canadian Infantry. He was killed in action in France, aged 39, on the 10th July 1917 and is buried in Fosse No. 10 Communal Cemetery Extension, Sains-En-Gohelle, France. He had been born in Galashiels and was the son of Jane and the late Archibald Gray of Trinity Street, Hawick. He had emigrated to Canada and was farming in Alberta when he enlisted in November 1915. He joined his Battalion in France in August 1916 but was wounded and evacuated to the Scottish National Red cross Hospital in Glasgow. Upon recovery he re joined his Battalion in April 1917. His Headstone is inscribed “Peace Perfect Peace”.
