Private James Turnbull Hendry, 1st Battalion, Royal Scots. He was killed in action at Salonika, aged 33, on the 1st October 1916 and is buried in Struma Military Cemetery, Greece. He had been born in Galashiels and was the son of Thomas and Lizzie Hendry og Galashiels and the husband of Mary Mitchell Hendry of Govan, Glasgow. He had enlisted in Glasgow and joined his Battalion just as they moved from France to Salonika. He fell in the attack on 2 Bulgarian held villages on the Struma plain. Attacking behind their pipers the Royal Scots gained their objectives, consolidated and then repulsed five counter attacks. 2 Officers and 39 Other Ranks were killed and 1 Officer and 90 Other Ranks were wounded.
