Sergeant William Lowrie Lees, 4th ( Border ) Battalion, Kings Own Scottish Borderers. He was killed in Holland, aged 33, on the 24th November 1944. He had been born in Selkirk in 1911 and was the husband of Elsie Lees of Galashiels. He worked in his father’s tailoring business in Selkirk and he was elected Standard Bearer for the 1936 Common Riding. He also played Rugby for Selkirk R.F.C. The Battalion went back to the Continent in October 1944 and took part in Operation ” Infatuate”, the assault on the German held Island of Walcheren at the mouth of the Scheldt River. When he fell the Battalion were in part of the line of the River Maas having relieved Canadian Units and suffered some casualties from shells and mortars. He is buried in Bergen-Op-Zoom War Cemetery, Netherlands where his Headstone is inscribed ” At The Setting Of The Sun and In The Morning We Shall Remember”. The photos show Borderers in Holland.
