Private Thomas Turnbull, 1st/5th ( Territorial ) Battalion, Royal Scots. He was killed in action at Gallipoli, aged 23, on 4th June 1915. He was the stepson of Thomas Turnbull and son of Martha Turnbull of Springfield, Yarrow and is commemorated on the Helles Memorial, Helles, Gallipoli, Turkey. He had been employed as a joiner in Edinburgh before enlisting in September 1914 and landing with his Battalion on Gallipoli on 25th April 1915. He fell during the Third Battle of Krithia which was designed to cut the Peninsula in two. The Battalion played a passive role in the Battle in as much as they spent most of it in reserve. However there was little safety in the trench zone from the enfilading Turkish machine guns and consequently casualties were suffered although the Scots repulsed several counter attacks. The attack in general failed with few gains and heavy losses. The photographs show British troops during the Battle.
