Private Anthony Taylor

Private Anthony Taylor, 2nd/7th ( Territorial ) Battalion, Duke of Wellington’s ( West Riding Regiment ). He was killed in action in France on 28th November 1917 during the Battle of Cambrai . He was the son of Mrs Hick, High Street, Berwick and is commemorated on the Cambrai Memorial, Louveral, France.  Before enlisting he had worked as a painter with his brother Robert. After joining up he had trained at North Shields as a signaller before going to France in June 1917. This was the first time tanks had been used en masse and on good ground to effect a breakthrough of the German lines. The first photograph shows tanks just before the attack and the second  shows a tank in close up.
