Private William Broomfield Whitelaw, 16th Battalion, Australian Infantry. He died in France on 8th September 1916, aged 44, during the Battle of the Somme and is buried in Caudry Old Communal Cemetery, Nord, France. (At that time Caudry was in German hands so it may have been he died whilst wounded and as a Prisoner of War ). He had emigrated to Australia where he worked as a miner He had been born in Yetholm and was the son of the late George and Mary Broomfield Whitelaw, Yetholm Mill, Roxburghshire and the uncle of Alex Whitelaw also remembered on the Yetholm Memorial who had been killed near Ypres some 6 months earlier. He had emigrated to Australia in 1891 and before enlisting he had been employed as a miner in Laverton, Western Australia. The photographs show Allied troops on the Somme. and the colour image depicts a peaceful Somme landscape today.
