Stoker 1st Class Walter Sinton

Stoker 1st Class Walter George Sinton, Royal Navy. He was lost at sea aboard H.M.Torpedo Boat 11 on 7th March 1916, aged 25. He was the son of Mr and Mrs George Sinton of 17 Laburnum Avenue, Wallsend . He was a native of Berwick-upon-Tweed and is commemorated on the Chatham Naval Memorial. The ship had been built at Scotstoun in 1907 and weighed 225 tons with an armament of 1 12 pounder gun and 3 torpedo tubes. On 7th March in company with the Destroyer H.M.S. “Coquette” she ran into a minefield near the Sunk Light vessel. “Coquette” sank first and when the T.B 11 went to her assistance she herself struck a mine and sank very quickly with the loss of 3 Officers and 21 Ratings. He had been employed at the Locomotive Shed at Tweedmouth before joining the Royal Navy as a Regular in 1912.
