Private James Gray, 1st Battalion, Gordon Highlanders. He was killed in France on 18th June 1917 aged 21. He was the son of Mary Coulter and the step son of John Gray and is commemorated on the Arras Memorial, Arras, France. Before enlisting in June 1915 he had been employed as a butler/valet at “Maxpoffle House”, St Boswells. He had originally enlisted in the 2nd Battalion but had been transferred to the 1st Battalion upon his return to France after being wounded during the Battle of the Somme in 1916.
