Lance Corporal William Grieve

Lance Corporal William Grieve, ” B” Squadron, Lothian and Borders Horse. He was hit by shellfire in Belgium, aged 28, and died from his wounds on the 18th July 1916. He had been born in Selkirk in 1894 and was the son of James and Margaret Grieve of Howden, Selkirk. Along with his brother Walter ( see above ) he was a well known local cricketer and had gone to France with his Squadron in September 1915. On the 17th July he and several others were in an observation post at ” Siege Farm” near Messines when it was struck by a shell killing and wounding several men including John Palfrey from Selkirk ( see below ). Two fellow troopers received the Military Medal for getting the wounded out of the burning hut amidst heavy shellfire. He is buried in Bailleul Communal Cemetery Extension, Nord, France.
