Lance Corporal Walter Brownlee

Lance Corporal Walter Renwick Brownlee, 5th Battalion, Cameron Highlanders. He was killed in action in Tunisia, aged 24, on the 6th April 1943. He had been born in Selkirk in 1919 and was the son of James and Dora Brownlee of 54 Buccleuch Road, Selkirk. He is buried in Sfax War Cemetery, Sfax, Tunisia where his Headstone is inscribed ” At The Rising And The Going Down Of the Sun We Will Remember You”. He fell during the Battle of Wadi Akrit. His battalion, as part of the 51st ( Highland ) Division, seized the Djebel Roumana Ridge and forced a gap for the rest of the Division to exploit. The Germans counter attacked but were repulsed and forced to retreat.
