Flight Sergeant Walter Ward

Flight Sergeant Walter Graham Ward, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. He died at Home on 30th April 1945 and is buried in Selkirk Cemetery. He had been born in Selkirk in 1928 and was the Grand Son of the late James and Jane Ward of Forest Terrace, Selkirk. He was a Member of both the Selkirk Cricket and Rugby Clubs and had served with the local Air Training Corps. He was a member of 428 ( R.C.A.F. ) Squadron which was part of 6 Group Royal Canadian Air Force. He joined the Canadian crew at the 26th Operational Training Unit as their flight engineer. He was killed in a flying accident when his aircraft crashed at the village of Sandon, Stafford during a cross country navigational training flight. The Squadron flew the Avro Lancaster heavy bomber from R.A.F. Middleton St. George, Yorkshire and its last War Operation was flown on the 25th April 1945.,
