Private William Miller

Private William Miller, 1st/5th ( Dumfries and Galloway ) Battalion, Kings Own Scottish Borderers. He died from wounds in hospital in Egypt, aged 32, on the 24th April 1917. He had been born in Coldingham and was the son of John and Mary Miller of Ferneycastle, Reston and the husband of Helen Miller of Morningside, Edinburgh. He had been wounded on the 19th April during the Second Battle of Gaza when the Battalion had taken part in the attack on the strong Turkish positions on ” Outpost Hill” and had suffered heavy casualties. 10 Officers and 47 Other Ranks were killed and 8 Officers and 226 Other Ranks were wounded. In addition 52 Other Ranks were posted missing. He is buried in Kantara War Cemetery, Egypt. ( there is an excellent account of this attack in Gavin Richardson’s book ” After Gallipoli”.
