Private James Bell, 7th Battalion, Kings Own Scottish Borderers. He died in hospital in France on 7th March 1916, age 48. He was the son of the late Alexander and Jane Bell of Rutherford and is buried in Abbeville Communal Cemetery, Somme, France. At that time the Battalion were in trenches in the Loos Sector where artillery and snipers took an incessant toll. He had been born in Lilliesleaf and had enlisted in Hawick. His Headstone is inscribed ” Thy Purpose Lord We Cannot See But All Is Well That’s Done by Thee “.
