Private George Fleming

Private George Fleming, 10th ( Service ) Battalion, Cameronians. He was killed in action in France, aged 23, on 25th September 1915 on the first day of the Battle of Loos. He had been born in Bowden and  was the son of John and Anne Fleming of Danielton Cottages, Melrose and is commemorated on the Loos Memorial, Dud Corner, Loos, France. His Battalion was part of the 15th ( Scottish) Division and suffered very heavy casualties in the attack on Loos and Hill 70. Out of 27 Officers 21 became casualties together with 464 Other Ranks. The first photo shows Scots troops marching up to the line before the Battle and the second shows an actual assault with the troops disappearing into the gas and smoke clouds which the British had used for the first time during the War. The third image shows the village of Loss after its capture and the fourth shows Hill 70 looking over from Loos village.
