Private Robert Mitchell

Private Robert Mitchell,8th Battalion, Royal Scots. He was killed in action in France on 11th April 1918 during the German Spring Offensives. He was the son of James Mitchell of Henderland, Meggat, Selkirk and is commemorated on the Loos Memorial, Dud Corner, Loos, France. On that day the Battalion was involved in severe and confused defensive actions near Merville where a dangerous German attack was foiled near Paradis Church before the retreat continued. This fighting cost the Battalion 4 Officers and 31 Other Ranks killed with7 Officers and 92 Other Ranks wounded. In addition 5 Officers and 51 Other Ranks were posted missing ( some of whom were probably prisoners)
