Private George Anderson

Private George Anderson, 1st/6th Battalion, Gordon Highlanders. He was killed in action in France during the Battle of Arras on 23rd April 1917, aged 19. He had been born in Lauder and was the son of George Anderson of the Old Schoolhouse, Lauder and is commemorated on the Arras Memorial, Arras, France. Before enlisting at age 18 he had been an under gardener at Allanbank, Lauder. His father was a joiner as well as the school Janitor. ( The ” Berwickshire Advertiser ” gives his Regiment as the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders ). The artist’s illustration shows the nature of the fighting during the Battle and the photo shows British troops in the main street of a captured village near Arras.
