Private William Fox, 30th Battalion, Australian Infantry. He was killed in action in Belgium on 19th September 1917, aged 35, during the Battle of Third Ypres. He was the son of Adam and Jane Fox and had been born in Kelso in 1882. He had served 12 years as a Royal Marine before emigrating to Australia where he re- enlisted. He is commemorated on the Menin Gate, Ypres, Flanders, Belgium. The photographs show the desolation of the Flanders battlefield where the incessant shelling had destroyed the drainage systems and allowed the autumnal rains to flood the ground.
