Private John Guthrie. 8th ( Service ) Battalion, Leicestershire Regiment. He was killed in action, aged 20, near Ephy in France on 22nd March 1918 on the second day of the German Spring Offensive ( Operation Michael ) and is commemorated on the Pozieres Memorial;, Pozieres, Somme, France. He had been born in Yetholm and was the son of the late Andrew and Helen Guthrie. He was working in his Uncle’s butchers business in Yetholm when he enlisted in the 6th Dragoon Guards in May 1917. He was then transferred to the Leicesters in France in August 1917. The photographs show Allied troops preparing to resist further German advances.
