Cadet Hamish Bews. Merchant Navy. He died on Active Service aboard the Royal Fleet Auxiliary “British Valour” on 6th December 1943, aged 19. He was the only son of Mr and Mrs James Bews of 21 Forestfield, Kelso and is commemorated on the Tower Hill Memorial, London. Mr Bews was a tailor in Kelso having moved there from Stirling in 1927 and his son had been educated at Kelso High School.” British Valour” had been launched on the Clyde by Lithgows Ltd in 1927 and served as a tanker until 1939 when it was requisitioned by the Admiralty as an Royal Fleet Auxiliary for war service.
