Private Peter Spence, 50th ( Calgary) Battalion, Canadian Infantry. He was killed in action in France, aged 25, on the 19th November 1916 during the Battle of the Somme. He had been born in Jedburgh and was the son of Walter and Margaret Spence of Abbey Place, Jedburgh and 938 Braemar Place, Medicine Hat, Alberta, Canada. He had been working as an ironmonger in Jedburgh when he emigrated to Canada in 1910 to join his Parents in Medicine Hat. He was working in hardware when he enlisted in February 1915 landing in France in August 1916. At that time the Battalion were in front line trenches on the Ancre. He is commemorated on the Vimy Memorial, France. conditions on the Somme in late autumn were very bad the rains having turned the chalky soil of the Region into a glutinous quagmire which made all movement difficult.
