Private James Robertson

Private James Robertson, 18th ( Western Ontario ) Battalion, Canadian Infantry. He was killed in France, aged 29, on the 21st August 1917. He had been born in Jedburgh and was thge son of Christina Robertson and the stepson of the late William Robertson of 30 High Street, Jedburgh. He had emigrated to Canada in around 1912 and was working as a baker in Woodstock, Ontario when he enlisted in January 1916. He was a keen church member there  and a great admirer of Robert Burns. He was posted to his Battalion in France in July 1917. He and 22 of his comrades were killed by shellfire whilst on the road into reserve positions. He is buried in Aix-Noulette Communal Cemetery Extension, France. ( Photo of Private Robertson courtesy of J. D. Smith).
