Lance Sergeant William Selby Middlemis, 102nd ( Central Ontario ) Battalion, Canadian Infantry. He was killed in action in France , aged 31, on the 10th June 1917. He had been born in Lanton, Jedburgh and was the son of Elizabeth and the late Thomas Middlemis of Jedburgh. He had been working as a horse shoer in Victoria, British Columbia when he enlisted in January 1916 landing in France in August 1916. He fell in an attack on “Candle Trench” which failed to surprise the enemy and was called off with some casualties. He is commemorated on the Vimy Memorial, Vimy, France.
